Trick question, adventurers: who counts as your neighbor? A very smart lawyer once asked Jesus that exact question, hoping for an easy answer he could check off his list — and instead Jesus told him a story about a dusty road, a man left hurting in the dirt, and three travelers who each had to decide whether to stop. Two of them crossed to the other side. The third was the last person anybody expected. Come along for one of the most famous parables Jesus ever told (Luke 10:25–37), and find out why "love your neighbor" is a lot bigger than we think.

For grown-ups
The lawyer in this parable isn't a villain — he's us on a tired day. He wanted “neighbor” defined narrowly enough that he could call the job finished, and Jesus refused to give him a definition at all. He gave him a verb instead. What's quietly convicting here is that the two men who walked past weren't bad men; they were religious men who knew every rule about loving God and still crossed to the other side. You might ask your kids where they saw someone left out this week — and then, gently, whether anyone in your own family crossed the road.
